Senior Product Owner

Reporting to the Product Line Manager, the Senior Product Owner is a crucial position on the Agile SCRUM teams, and plays a key role in the success of CCH Tax & Accounting software projects and products. The Senior Product Owner works closely with the Product Owner Lead, Product Manager, Product Line Manager and directly with customers, to understand the market needs. They are responsible for conveying the market needs to the Agile SCRUM team(s) in the form of user stories. The Senior Product Owner is also responsible for prioritizing the backlog based on business value and serving as the point person for the developers and QA members on the Agile SCRUM team. The Senior Product Owner participates in standard SCRUM ceremonies including stand-ups, backlog grooming, and sprint planning. The Senior Product Owner is responsible for signing off on features to ensure they meet the agreed upon acceptance criteria and overall market need.


* Analysis

* Works collaboratively with other teams (such as platform and other product teams) to understand how Tax fits within the overall CCH Axcess platform.

* Clearly identifies scope of features collaboratively with other team members, architecture, and development.

* Proactively generates relevant ideas for new and improved use of technology, based on knowledge of the business, products and systems, and customers' business needs.

* Prioritization & Planning

* Ensures that the Product Backlog is constantly prioritized to secure delivery of maximum business value.

* Works in relevant structures (e.g. Scrum of Scrums) to manage dependencies and set priorities across multiple teams and Backlog items and to maintain alignment to the Release Product vision and roadmap.

* In determining relative business value of the backlog items, the Senior Product Owner uses necessary inputs such as product suite priorities and the need to address technical debt.

* The resultant Product Backlog is aligned with various stakeholders including product suite product teams and architecture initiatives.

* Development Readiness

* Works with architects and technical leads to determine implementation strategies and design.

* Develops User Stories for all new functionality, architectural enhancements, and technical debt/refactoring efforts.

* Presents user stories to the teams in grooming and design sessions, ensuring that new feature and enhancements meets the acceptance criteria so the work can be designated as complete.

* Directs and ensure the implementation of the solutions follow the correct design and modification required for successful delivery.

* Ensures user stories are ready for development prior to Sprint beginning with all necessary functional and non-functional details.

* Available to provide advice, clarification, and guidance to development teams during the execution of each Sprint.

* Acceptance & Sign-off

* The Senior Product Owner champions sufficient customer engagement during the development through, for example, product demonstration and customer feedback. The Senior Product Owner inspects, accepts or rejects completed work from the development Sprint.

* Facilitates communication between all impacted teams.

* Works with stakeholders and management to resolve escalated issues and provides status updates to internal customers and leadership for customer escalations assigned to the team.

* Product Knowledge

* Product Knowledge -- Senior Product Owner is a subject matter expert in the relevant product domains. It is expected that the Senior Product Owner will aid other Product Owners in becoming experts in the product from a feature & functionality perspective.

* Product Presentations - Acts as product champion and presents designs and released work to the sales teams, marketing teams, training & support personnel and select user customers

* Product Documentation -- Documents and supports new feature development for internal consumption including release notes and on-line documentation

* Market Knowledge -- Develops an understanding of target market and user base and uses this to guide product decisions. Spends appropriate time in the field speaking with customers, non-customers and evaluators to observe their use of the product.

* Product Presentations - Acts as product champion and presents designs and released work to the sales teams, marketing teams, training & support personnel and select lead user customers. The Senior Product Owner is expected to present at User Conferences as needed.

* Other duties - Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.


* Bachelor's degree from an accredited university, or equivalent experience

* Scrum Product Owner certification (CSPO) a plus.


* 5+ years of relevant working experience in one or more of these areas:

* Tax, Audit and accounting industry

* CPA market

* Software and information services industries

* Preferred

* 5+ years of relevant product management, product owner, business analysis, or related experience in an agile environment developing commercial software solutions

* Managing Software as a Service (SaaS) products

* Experience using commercially available backlog management tools

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications: (First list requirements, followed by preferences.)

* Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision

* Skilled at meeting facilitation and presentation

* Strong time management skills and project management skills

* Must thrive in a fast-paced, time-compressed and dynamic environment

* Skilled at writing acceptance criteria

* Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

* Familiar with Agile Scrum methodologies and Product Owner role

* Experienced with Story Mapping

* Experience leading the product design process with usability professionals and product architects

* Drive all aspects of the software development lifecycle with Development teams; iteration themes, backlog grooming, user story creation and decomposition, retrospectives, etc.
